Congratulations on deciding to try a Reiki session. It is tempting to breathe a sigh of relief once you have made the decision and then reach out for a practitioner from a reputable listing and “give them a try.” Helpful friends may even refer you to someone they know. While a good place to start, a referral is not the end of your search.
Choosing a Reiki practitioner is the most important next step to take after deciding to try Reiki.
Like any other service provider, Reiki professionals vary greatly in personality, temperament and in the style and flavor of their Reiki practice. Just as you would research and then try out a doctor, dentist, fitness trainer, coach or any other professional, please take the time to research and get to know your Reiki practitioner prior to receiving a Reiki treatment.
Some questions to ask a potential Reiki provider:
Ask them “What is Reiki?” A seasoned professional will provide you with a credible answer that will make sense to you.
When did you learn Reiki? (As with any practice, dedication over years shows commitment to the practice and longer experience in working with self and others.)
How long have you offered Reiki to the public? You want to be sure your practitioner has worked with clients outside of their circle of family and friends, ensuring their ability to provide a quality professional experience for you.
Do you practice Self-Reiki every day? How has Reiki assisted you in your life? Listen for credible, consistent practice and tangible results.
Do you combine your Reiki treatment with any other holistic offerings, and if so, what are they? Many practitioners have learned other modalities. You want to be clear on exactly the type of treatment they are offering.
What school of Reiki do you practice? (This is an interesting question as you may have to do further research to understand their response, but it is worth looking up or pursuing the subject further with them by asking them to describe their practice.)
What is a Reiki session with you like? What happens during a session, what can I expect, if anything, following a Reiki session?
A practitioner will likely ask you about your understanding of Reiki and why you are seeking Reiki treatment.
By the end of your conversation your questions and concerns should be addressed in a simple and clear manner and you should feel comfortable talking with the practitioner. Please discuss any concerns you may have about Reiki treatment with a practitioner before going for treatment. How they respond to your concerns will show you their openness and acceptance, two qualities you may want to ensure are present for your experience with a Reiki practitioner.
A Reiki professional will also offer disclosures
provide background information and require you to read and sign documents acknowledging your understanding of the nature of the Reiki treatment being offered before your session. They may provide you with references upon request.
As noted, there are schools of Reiki that differ in understanding, practice and teaching as well as different practice styles passed on to students through their teachers. Reiki practitioners vary in individual personality and approach. If you have a Reiki experience that does not meet your expectations, please do not give up on Reiki. Have an honest discussion with your provider if you can, and if not, seek another provider who may practice differently and be more compatible with your personality. As one of my teachers put it, like ice cream, there is one Reiki, but many flavors.
